I Tried Preply for Spanish Lessons: My Honest Review (+ 70% Off Trial Lessons)

Learning another language fluently has always been on my bucket list, but I’ve never really prioritised it. Over the years, I’ve downloaded countless language-learning apps, but none of them did much to improve my conversational Spanish.

Like most UK teens, I studied both French and Spanish at school, but a lack of practice means a lot of what I learned back then has slipped away.

I genuinely loved learning Spanish, and did both a GCSE and AS Level, but lost interest when lessons became dominated by verb conjugations. I even started a Spanish course at university before abandoning it because it was eating into my partying lifestyle.

That said, I’ve continued trying to improve my Spanish whenever I travel. I’ve practised in Spain, Mexico and Colombia, and even taught my husband enough Spanish to order drinks at the bar when we’re on holiday. Annoyingly, he’s now a more confident Spanish speaker than I am, so everyone assumes he’s the fluent one!

I cannot let him beat me at this.

Preply Review 2026: The Language Learning Platform That Finally Got Me Speaking Spanish

My goal is simple: I want to feel confident speaking Spanish when I travel. I can usually manage the basics, but as soon as a native speaker replies at full speed, I’m immediately humbled and have to switch back to English.

Choosing a language tutor on Preply

I filtered by native speakers and looked for a patient-looking woman. I knew I’d feel less self-conscious practicing Spanish with another woman, so I totally skimmed over all the male tutors.

You can see how many active students each tutor has, as well as the total number of lessons they’ve taught and their rating.

One feature I particularly liked was the short introduction video each tutor provides. It gave me a sense of their personality and, crucially, how easy they were to understand when speaking Spanish.

I wholeheartedly recommend all three of the tutors I worked with: Marta, Johanna and Ana. They all had slightly different teaching styles, but all three were very well-prepared for our lessons and made me feel at ease.

What does a Preply lesson involve?

One quick tip: don’t use your phone.

I made that mistake during my first lesson and struggled to read the slides and notes my tutor was sharing. A laptop or desktop provides a much better experience.

The tutors were all lovely and we started our trial lessons with casual chats so we could get to know each other. This meant they were able to identify areas of improvement with my current Spanish knowledge and understanding, give me quick corrections and then create a learning plan for me. This can include homework and uses different formats, including videos to watch and reading exercises.

I had plenty of opportunities to practise speaking, listening and reading, with a strong emphasis on real-world communication rather than memorising grammar rules.

Preply also tells you how much time you’ve spent speaking in contrast to your tutor, which is a clear way to see how you’re gaining confidence!

How does Preply help you learn a language?

The best thing about Preply for me was that it gave me the chance to build confidence by speaking Spanish with a native speaker, and to get lessons tailored to me and my goals. I also love the user interface as the user journey feels really well thought out.

My reading and writing skills are reasonably strong, but speaking and listening are where I struggle. Every tutor helped me build confidence, expand my vocabulary and apply it to realistic situations I’d encounter while travelling.

Preply also offers a range of learning tools outside of lessons.

Whenever I booked a lesson, tutors contacted me almost immediately to ask about my goals and preferences so they could tailor the session accordingly.

I also had the opportunity to do a quick ‘level test’ to assess my current Spanish skills, which is used to help your tutor prepare for your lesson by testing your grammar, vocabulary and speaking skills. The questions start at Elementary (A1) level and gradually get more difficult. I was pleasantly surprised by how far I got before I had to tap out!

Another feature I loved was the vocabulary section. It includes flashcards, exercises and personalised word lists from your lessons.

As a busy mum to a toddler, being able to squeeze in five or ten minutes of revision throughout the day has been incredibly useful.

What does Preply cost?

Each tutor has a set fee per lesson, and this is clearly displayed on their profile. The tutors I chose charged between £29 and £59 per lesson.
